Jonathan's Giant Sunflower

About four months ago, Jonathan Horner, a 9-year-old who goes to Austin Elementary School, decided to plant a sunflower in the front yard of his house.

Because the ground didn’t look like it would be able to support the flower, his parents told him to maybe choose another spot.

“We told him we didn’t think that was a good spot because the grass wasn’t growing well,” said Crystal Horner, Jonathan’s mom.

However, Jonathan was sure it would grow in the spot he picked. He watered it all the time and watched it grow.

Jonathan's Flower

Sure enough, four months later, it is the largest of all the sunflowers around their house. Jonathan calls it “Jonathan’s Flower,” and he is proud of his hard work.

“I am happy about how tall it grew,” said Jonathan. “It’s taller than my house, and it is my favorite color.”

Jonathan has two siblings, Abby, 8, and Noah, 4, and they also like to grow sunflowers in the yard for the neighborhood to see.

The family started this tradition of growing sunflowers years ago. They chose sunflowers because it is the family’s favorite kind of flower, they grow tall and bloom beautifully.

Jonathan said he wants to be a scientist when he grows up. Some of his favorite activities are reading, drawing, and riding his bike. He enjoys family church time as well. Only time will tell what he'll grow next.
