The Texas Police Athletic Federation conducted a pre-board meeting on Saturday afternoon to discuss the 2016 Police Games that will be taking place in San Angelo in June.
Suzanna Aguirre is helping to coordinate the event and stated, “The board is meeting with our local coordinators and we are just finalizing the plan and making sure that everything is in place for a successful event in June.”
The Police Games will include over 33 Olympic-style events involving police officers, military, and also retired police and military.
“Basically, it is to build comradery among police officers,” said Aguirre. “It's officers from all over the state that can compete. We are expecting over 1,000 officers to be in San Angelo that week, and so that should boost our economy. We're trying to fill the hotels, and just trying to promote the event and make sure it is successful.”
She also explained that this event has been in the works for the past two years.
“San Angelo Police Department and the Convention of Visitor's Bureaus placed the bid to the Texas Police Athletic Federation two years ago," Aguirre said. "We submitted the bid and they came for a site tour. They loved the community, our venues, and the short distances to everything. They came back and told us in September that we had won the bid. So basically the last two years, we have been planning for the event, which will now be happening this June.”
Aguirre also said the goal is to ensure the city has everything the competitors need to have the best experience since many of them will bring families, so this will be a vacation for some of them.
"They will get to enjoy our tourist attractions, and our city, and hopefully do some shopping, and of course, heads in beds,” she said.
The events will be held at different venues throughout the city, including a 5K and 10K in the downtown area, a triathlon at the lake, and shooting events at the gun range.
“The City has been super helpful and the school district has been amazing,” Aguirre explained. “There's a lot of people helping to make this huge event happen and just give the economy a boost, so I am really excited about it.”
