Two more candidates filed to run for the San Angelo City Council on Friday, raising the total number of candidates on the May 7 ballot to seven.
Trinidad Aguirre Jr. filed for the District 1 seat. Matthew Lane Carter filed to run for the District 5 seat.
Aguirre, who was defeated by incumbent Rodney Fleming in the previous race for the SMD1 council position, is running unopposed so far. He was the chairman of last year's City of San Angelo Charter Review Committee. He released a statement upon filing:
"I believe that I possess the qualifications and experience to have a positive impact on the City Council. Given the economic hardships that San Angelo is facing with the down turn of the oil industry, I believe my financial and marketing background can make a positive impact to reverse this trend. As a contract administrator, I will also ensure that we continue to work on our core issues: water, roads, and safety.
"I believe that everyone is important and every voice should be heard. I also believe that San Angelo is the greatest place to live and raise a family," Aguirre said.
The District 1, 3 and 5 Council seats, along with the police chief’s race, will be on the ballot. The filing period continues through Feb. 19. The winning City Council candidates will serve three-year terms. The elected police chief will serve a four-year term.
