For those individuals wanting a place to drop off unwanted items, appliances and other debris, they can do so beginning Jan. 6 at the City of San Angelo landfill’s new citizens convenience center, said a press release Monday.
The convenience center was built for approximately $250,000 by Republic Services under its contract with COSA to operate the landfill. The center features eight drop-off lanes to accommodate passenger vehicles and small trailers delivering large loads of garbage.
The landfill is located at 3002 Old Ballinger Highway and opens from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. It also opens from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. City residents are allowed one free dumping per month if they show a recent water bill and a photo ID with a corresponding address.
“The new citizens convenience center represents another upgrade to San Angelo’s solid waste services, as did curbside recycling and free quarterly bulk pickup,” said Shane Kelton, operations director. “Our citizens have long been able to use the landfill for free once a month. Now they can so more easily, and cleanly, than ever.”
According to the release, the completely paved convenience center is located near the landfill’s entrance, and allows the public to dispose of waste without entering the rough terrain of the facility’s industrial area. Users will pull up to a raised platform that allows them to easily and safely unload bulk items at any one of four bays. The center also provides an appliance drop-off spot and planned xeriscaping.
