Water Line Rupture Shuts off Water in East San Angelo

An old water line at the corner of Luna and Maryland Streets has ruptured, shooting water into the air like a geiser.

A hole around the leak has been dug and the water has been completely shut off. City crews are on scene waiting for locators to come out and find gas and electrical lines, before they proceed to dig any further.

At the present, water has been temporarily disconnected in the area, which will affect everyone from Bell to Woodriff. An estimation on how long repair work will take has not yet been assessed.

The rupture was called in this morning, although a specific time has not been named. There is no estimate on how much water has been lost, however there are no nearby storm drains to catch th runoff.

Two more ruptures hasve been reported near W. 23rd and on Coliseum Drive.

Update 1:15 p.m.

A large hole has been dug in someone's front yard in the 1100 block of 23rd St., where the massive leak has turned the narrow roadway into a river. Crews on scene are working two large pumps to empty the hole and find the leak, but the water valves remain open, water gushing out and being lost in the absence of a runoff system.

The road will soon be shut down to through traffic. Several valves controlling the water are located on 17th St., and the shut-off is a time-consuming process that has yet to be completed.

The line ruptured around the same time as the one at Luna and Maryland, however the exact time has not been determined. Neighbors in the area say they have been watching the crews work for at least an hour.

The leak on Coliseum Drive is reported to be under control.
