Driver Arrested After Rollover Crash Takes out Electricity for 2,045 San Angeloans Sunday Morning

Over 2000 San Angelo residents are without power this morning because the driver of a red Chevrolet compact hatchback crashed into a power pole in front of Sitel on the Loop 306 frontage road, 3200 West Loop 306. The 911 call happened at 10:14 a.m. this morning.

According to police investigating the crash, the driver was traveling westbound on the frontage road towards the onramp to Loop 306. At some point, the driver lost control of his vehicle, traversed the bar ditch and slammed into the power pole in front of the Sitel building before rolling on its side.

The driver was complaining of shoulder pain, police said, but refused to be transported to the emergency room via ambulance. The driver was subsequently arrested. We did not learn why, however.

Police said that the traffic lights at Knickerbocker and Loop 306 are currently inoperable, but temporary stop signs are being installed.

AEP services 14,478 electric meters in the 76904 zip code. Of those, 2,045 are currently without service following this crash.

The driver will be cited for “failure to control speed”, police said.

Update 11:15 a.m.

The arresting officer had already transported the driver from the scene to the Tom Green County Jail, so we did not receive on-the-scene confirmation for the reason of the arrest. However, there is an entry on the police blotter entered at 10:52 a.m. for a drunk driver at the same address as this crash.

Barrow ditch is proper term, I think it comes from the fact that the road crews would borrow dirt from side of road when building it., and that it is for drainage also. But a long time Texas native once told me that the pronunciation came from the Texans with a strong accent, and it would come out souding like "bar". Find yourself a true Texan with a strong accent and you will see whati mean.
I know that barrow ditch is correct, but not until I was grown and out of the family home. For us it was always bar ditch growing up. :)
The drunk driver should of called their mommy to come get them. Just like the SA Country Club kid. They would have been sleeping comfortably in their bed instead of the County Jail. Just saying.
Not all young people in this town are priviledged so to make that comment about calling his mom to get him out of a bind was judgmental and arrogant of you to assume. As one who lost power over this I am so grateful all it did was cause a power outage and not consume any more innocent lives. Shame on you Omar you know better! Really sad how this town has become so consumed with such irresponsible drivers!
I don't think you can read. The comment you replied to didn't say anything about having their mommy get them out of a bind. They were talking about calling their mommy to drive them so they wouldn't be driving drunk. If you think that's a bad idea, then I have no words for your level of stupidity. How stupid do you have to be to take offense to someone suggesting that a drunk driver call for a ride instead of driving them self?
