Over 2000 San Angelo residents are without power this morning because the driver of a red Chevrolet compact hatchback crashed into a power pole in front of Sitel on the Loop 306 frontage road, 3200 West Loop 306. The 911 call happened at 10:14 a.m. this morning.
According to police investigating the crash, the driver was traveling westbound on the frontage road towards the onramp to Loop 306. At some point, the driver lost control of his vehicle, traversed the bar ditch and slammed into the power pole in front of the Sitel building before rolling on its side.
The driver was complaining of shoulder pain, police said, but refused to be transported to the emergency room via ambulance. The driver was subsequently arrested. We did not learn why, however.
Police said that the traffic lights at Knickerbocker and Loop 306 are currently inoperable, but temporary stop signs are being installed.
AEP services 14,478 electric meters in the 76904 zip code. Of those, 2,045 are currently without service following this crash.
The driver will be cited for “failure to control speed”, police said.
Update 11:15 a.m.
The arresting officer had already transported the driver from the scene to the Tom Green County Jail, so we did not receive on-the-scene confirmation for the reason of the arrest. However, there is an entry on the police blotter entered at 10:52 a.m. for a drunk driver at the same address as this crash.
