San Angelo Animal Shelter to Cease Euthanizations for One Day on June 11

The City of San Angelo Animal Shelter will participate in “Just One Day” on Wednesday, June 11, joining a national movement of shelters pledging not to euthanize any savable animals on that day in an effort to call attention to the adoptable pet population.

On June 11, the shelter, 3142 U.S. Highway 67 North, will extend its normal business hours to 9 a.m.-8 p.m. to showcase pets available for adoption. It will also engage in a daylong promotion of its adoptable animals by posting photos of them on the City’s Facebook page.

Concho Valley PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving), a local animal rescue group, will have some of the shelter’s dogs at its location in Sunset Mall, 4001 Sunset Drive, as will Critter Shack, a pet adoption group based in Menard, at its own adoption event.

Dogs can be adopted from the Animal Shelter for $85, which includes spaying or neutering, a rabies vaccine, microchipping and City registration. All dogs processed into the shelter are also vaccinated for canine distemper, Parvovirus and Bordetella (kennel cough) along with other maladies, are dewormed and are treated for fleas and ticks.

Cats can be adopted for $50, which includes spaying or neutering, a rabies vaccine and microchipping. All cats processed into the shelter are also vaccinated for other diseases, dewormed and treated for fleas.

The Animal Shelter also offers heartworm testing for $7 before a decision to adopt is made.

“It would be wonderful if some day we didn’t have to have a Just One Day event,” Animal Services Manager Julie Vrana said. “The key to reducing the number of animals who come to the shelter is being a responsible pet owner and having your dogs and cats spayed and neutered.”
