Steve Mild, who has worked in law enforcement for 39 years, most recently as a captain in the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office, has been hired as the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of San Angelo and the county. His first day was Monday, Nov. 18.
Mild succeeds Ron Perry, who served in the position for six years prior to retiring on Dec. 31, 2012. Emergency Management Planning Specialist Teresa Covey served in the post in the interim.
The coordinator plans, coordinates and administers the City’s emergency management program. Among the job’s responsibilities are responding to public emergency incidents and providing necessary support to responders, training personnel, advising local government officials on emergency management issues, coordinating with outside agencies on emergency management matters, and overseeing the Emergency Operations Center and the local warning system.
Mild’s resume includes eight pages of law enforcement and emergency management training and experience, including serving as part of the unified command during the Wildcat wildfires that scorched Tom Green and Coke counties in April 2011.
He worked as a patrol officer with the San Angelo Police Department from 1976-83 prior to stints with the Midland County Sheriff’s Office and the Austin Independent School District Police Department. He joined the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office in 1993, serving as a patrol deputy and criminal investigator prior to his appointment as operations captain.
“San Angelo has a top-flight team of first-responders who have proven their mettle time and again in emergency situations,” Mild said. “I am excited about the opportunity to serve alongside them in a new capacity. We’ll simply look to prepare them for every contingency and build upon their well-deserved reputation of excellence.”
