Sam Smith's One Man Campaign for God, Prayer and Country

Sam Smith is on a personal campaign to remind everyone around him that there is a God who is not silent, and God cares about each and every one of us.

For the past two years, Sam has been driving trucks in the oilfield. “I’ve seen a bad accident and an accident that could have been bad,” Sam says. “Many of the guys out there don’t know that Jesus said he’d protect you,” Sam continues.

Sam is publishing thousands of prayer cards. Catholic in faith, the cards are reminders that Sam hands out to men who he encounters in the oil field with a prayer of Saint Joseph, the Patron Saint of Workers. Sam believes a little prayer from any worker in the field may avert a catastrophe with supernatural help. The card’s “Prayer for the Crew” reads:

“Dear Lord. Please protect us and keep us safe in our daily work. Jesus please shine the light of your Holy Spirit upon us to help keep our perception keen, our minds clean and focused and our wit sharp! Amen.”

Sam Smith is a fixture in the San Angelo community. A long time member of the San Angelo Rotary Club, Sam sold advertising for Suddenlink for many years.  Growing tired of sales, Sam embarked upon the oilfield for a change of scenery, and a mid-life career path change.

“Back in February, Congressman Mike Conaway spoke at Rotary and it convicted me to keep on going. Conaway said, ‘We need to do something about the decline of moral values in this country.’”  Sam says. “It convinced me that I’m on to something.”

Since then, he has published prayer cards of other patron saints, including one for legislators. “I sent one to the president, and he sent me a thank you note. Sure it was a machine-made signature, but it was on White House stationary!” Sam says.

John Adams, the second President of the United States, warned that the country could not survive without a proper respect of a living God.

“We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other."

Sam says he’ll continue spreading the word. It’s his way of saving the country.

The idea that a country cannot prosper without a god driving it is simply ridiculous. If you take a look at countries like Sweden or Japan, which are primarily secular, I would say that they are doing just fine of not better than the US. Especially considering we have lawmakers who allow their religious views to dictate legal policy.
