HOUSTON, TX — An 11-year-old from Wall, TX, made history at RodeoHouston after she sold her Reserve Grand Champion Lamb for a record-breaking $240,000.
Officials said the price tag was higher than any previous Reserve Grand Champion Lamb sale at RodeoHouston.
The lamb was exhibited by 11-year-old Stratley Strube of Tom Green County in the NRG Arena.
The lamb was purchased by many buyers, including Tea & Bill Pinkley, Fire Safe Protection Services LP – Lizzy & Stephen McKinney, Melissa & Jimmy Guinn, and Skip Avara.
“This [auction] is for the youth of Texas,” Jimmy Guinn, one of the buyers, said .”This is for kids trying to change the world. You guys just witnessed history, and I don’t know what will happen next year, but we will be back.”
The money earned will go toward the winners' college fund and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund.
“As supporting young people’s education and agricultural pursuits is a goal for the HLSR, this year’s auction exceeded the previous sales for the Lamb and Goat Auction in HLSR history,” RodeoHouston stated. “The overwhelming support from donors succeeded and surpassed all expectations for the young exhibitors, allowing them to pursue their educational and agricultural dreams.”
We also reported earlier that another Wall native,15-year-old Blaize Benson, tied a Rodeohouston record.
Benson sold his Grand Champion Simmental Steer “Woozy” for $1 million.
Strube and Benson just so happen to be neighbors.
"We are next-door neighbors and lifetime friends with the Benson family," Strube’s mother, Brooke Strube, said. "Our kids have grown up together. This year's reserve grand champion lamb and grand champion steer were raised side by side, sharing a fence with one another. It was definitely a show season we will never forget and a special opportunity to share in the success with our neighbors."
