First Lady of the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo Passes Away at 89

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — Cynthia Lea McKethan Wittenburg, the first and only female president of the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association, has died. For 35 years, she was dedicated to the organization and volunteered countless hours in various capacities. 

Wittenburg worked with the SASSRA for 35 years. In 1963, she co-created the Women’s Department (now known as Creative Arts) with her friend Melba Cox and served as Superintendent for many years. She also served as the SASSRA's first and only female President from 1997 to 1998 and received the Gold Spur Award in 2009.

Wittenberg was a retired teacher who taught at SAISD schools, Glenn Jr. High and Central High School, for nearly 40 years. In 2001, she moved back to Waco, TX, to be closer to family. She died on February 28, 2024. 

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 20, from 10 am to noon at Bentwood Country Club in San Angelo. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be given in her honor to the Cynthia and Odus Wittenburg Memorial Scholarship Fund, benefitting The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Foundation (link and mailing address below), or to your favorite charity.
