Cynthia Lea McKethan Wittenburg, one of five girls born to Christine and Harmon McKethan, was born on October 17, 1934, in McClennan County, Texas, and passed away surrounded by family on February 28, 2024.
She is survived by her daughter Chrissi and husband Steve Gumbert of Richardson, son Odus “Boogie” Wittenburg, Jr. and his wife Ashley of Dripping Springs, and grandchildren Grant Gumbert and wife Madison of Richardson, Jake Gumbert of Lake City, Colorado, Will Wittenburg, Brooke Wittenburg, and Ty Wittenburg all of Dripping Springs, and sister Flo Judd of Duncanville. Cynthia cherished her family and left a legacy in her footsteps. She will be missed dearly, although we are comforted knowing she is in the presence of Jesus surrounded by her family and friends in Heaven.
Cynthia grew up on a farm near Waco where she attended school in South Bosque. Following high school she earned her degree in Education from North Texas University. In 1965 she married Odus Edward Wittenburg. Together they had many adventures with friends and were always giving back to the town they both loved dearly. After raising two children and spending 35 years together in San Angelo, Odus preceded her in passing in 1999.
Cynthia was a dedicated wife and an amazing mother and a super amazing Nana to her grandchildren. She was always willing to give of her time, talent, and treasure to causes she cared deeply about. A creative thinker and eternal optimist, Cynthia loved learning. As an educator for almost 40 years, she touched many lives. Cynthia taught at Glenn Jr. High School and Central High School. She was dedicated to the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo for 35 years, putting in countless volunteer hours for the organization in numerous capacities. She co-created the Women’s Department (now known as Creative Arts) with friend Melba Cox in 1963 and served as Superintendent for many years. She also served as the first and only female President of the SASSRA in 1997-1998 and received the Gold Spur award in 2009. Cynthia moved back to Waco in 2001 to be closer to family. Her passion for education continued as she worked for the Region 12 office of the Texas Education Service Center for 20 years. She enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, and looked forward each summer to her beach trip in Port Aransas.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 20, from 10 am to noon, at Bentwood Country Club in San Angelo. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be given in her honor to the Cynthia and Odus Wittenburg Memorial Scholarship Fund, benefitting The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Foundation (link and mailing address below) or to your favorite charity.
