Jamal Schumpert Running for San Angelo City Council District 4 Seat
SAN ANGELO, TX — Jamal Schumpert, a graduate of Angelo State University, is running for the Single-Member District 4 seat on the San Angelo City Council.
Schumpert moved to San Angelo in 2010 and, If elected, Schumpert said his first 90 days would focus on budget workshops and monitoring city spending.
“It’ll be a lot of sitting and, I guess, watching the budgets and making sure that the money is going to places it’s supposed to be,” he said. "To me, it's exciting. I get to see the numbers. I get to see who spends this, who spends that, and I get to tell the people that, most of all."
Schumpert emphasized the need for greater transparency at City Hall, saying council members should ask better questions about how tax dollars are spent. “I’ll be that type of city council member to be able to tell you, ‘Hey, I don’t think this is a good idea. What do you think about it?’” he said.
He expressed support for economic development opportunities tied to the I-27 corridor, calling it an “exciting time” for growth in manufacturing, transportation, and infrastructure. Schumpert said preparing the local workforce for jobs in fields like mechanics and mechanical engineering would help San Angelo take advantage of future opportunities.
Schumpert also voiced support for the San Angelo ISD bond, linking strong public schools to economic growth. “The better the school, the quality of the education of the people, the better people want to look at it,” he said.
On city spending decisions, Schumpert raised concerns about fairness, you can hear more on that in the video above.
Schumpert said he tries to live by a guiding principle he learned while living in San Angelo: “How you treat the least of these is how you’ll treat me.”
Schumpert is running against Patrick Keely for the District 4 seat. Current council member Lucy Gonzales is not seeking re-election. Election Day is May 3. Click here to view a district map.
