AUSTIN, TX - Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is calling for a name change for the New York strip steak, advocating for it to be rebranded as the “Texas strip.”
Patrick announced the proposal on social media after meeting with the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, arguing that the name should reflect Texas’ significant role in the beef industry.
In a post on X, Patrick questioned why the cut of steak should bear the name of a state known for dairy cows rather than Texas, which leads the nation in cattle production. “Just because a New York restaurant named Texas beef a New York Strip in the 19th century doesn’t mean we need to keep doing that,” Patrick wrote.
Patrick said he plans to introduce the proposal in the Texas Senate. If passed, restaurants and grocery stores in Texas would be asked to adopt the new name on menus and labels. However, the change would have little impact outside the state.
Texas’ cattle industry accounted for $15.5 billion in market value in 2022, according to the Texas Department of Agriculture. Patrick argued that promoting the “Texas strip” name would strengthen the marketing of Texas beef.
“We want this to catch on across the country and around the globe,” Patrick wrote. “Liberal New York shouldn’t get the credit for our hard-working ranchers.”

If they really knew anything about cuts of steak they'd know it was about how much fat cap is left on when butchered that makes the name of that cut. Not where it's from.
