Google Labels Gulf of Mexico as ‘Gulf of America’ After Trump’s Order

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Google Maps has updated its labeling of the Gulf of Mexico to include “Gulf of America” following an order by former President Donald Trump.

Google confirmed that it applies name changes when they are updated in official government sources. The company also stated that users outside the United States will see both “Gulf of America” and “Gulf of Mexico” on Google Maps.

Trump issued the order during his presidency, directing that the body of water shared by the U.S., Mexico, and Cuba be renamed. He also ordered the nation’s highest peak, Denali, to be reverted to its previous name, Mount McKinley. However, that change has not yet been implemented in official databases, and Denali remains listed under its Obama-era designation.

Google stated that its maps will reflect further updates from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the federal database of geographic features.
