Griffith Wants To Be Your Police Chief

 

SAN ANGELO, TX - Three candidates are vying for the coveted four-year term to succeed outgoing Chief Frank Carter, who announced he would not seek re-election. 

The contenders include Lt. Mike "Burrito" Hernandez, Lt. Chris Cimino, and Sgt. Travis Griffith

We will profile each candidate. 

Residents can vote for the non-partisan Police Chief election on May 4, 2024. 

San Angelo LIVE! is set to host a Police Chief Candidate Forum/Debate on Monday evening, March 18, 2024. The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Sugg Room at the Stephens Central Library.

The forum will be moderated by San Angelo LIVE! publisher Joe Hyde. 

The forum will consist of an introduction of the candidates along with a question-and-answer segment. 

The forum will also be streamed live on the San Angelo LIVE! website, YouTube, and Facebook platforms.

Admission to the event is free, and it is encouraged to arrive early, as seating is limited. 

Additionally, San Angelo LIVE! is accepting endorsement letters for the Police Chief race. Letters can be submitted via email to [email protected].

Now, who is Travis Griffith?

According to his campaign website:

  • Travis’ life is deeply rooted in his Christian faith, guiding his actions and decisions with compassion and integrity.
  • Serving as an Elder, Travis is actively involved in his spiritual community, reflecting his dedication to faith and service.
  • He is a longtime member of Paulann Baptist Church, where he deepens his faith and connects with his community.
  • Husband to Vanessa, a committed 4th-grade teacher in the San Angelo Independent School District (SAISD).
  • He is the proud father of Marissa, a 19-year-old aspiring nurse, and his newborn son, Barret, bringing joy and purpose to his life.
  • Volunteer Executive Director of Crime Stoppers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making our streets safer.
  • He actively participates in local initiatives as a board member of the Concho Valley Homeless Planning Coalition and the Concho Valley CARES Coalition, demonstrating his commitment to addressing key social issues.
  • Involved in the Rio Concho Retirement Community, showing his dedication to the well-being of our senior citizens.

Travis’s extensive career in law enforcement spans over two decades, including vital roles in the San Angelo Police Department (SAPD). His experience covers:

  • Critical frontline duties in SWAT and Patrol.
  • Specialized roles in Hostage Negotiation and as a Special Operations Detective.
  • Leadership and strategic positions in Administration.

His areas of leadership include:

  • Directing Patrol operations and the Criminal Investigation Division.
  • Overseeing Public Information/Relations and the Anti-Crime Unit.
  • Maintaining department integrity in Internal Affairs.

Beyond policing, Travis has over 25 years of experience in municipal government and has "selflessly" served as a volunteer EMT and firefighter.

"With over fifteen years of service within the local police force, he has become a familiar face of trust and reliability. His professional journey is intertwined with the city’s heartbeat, advocating for its safety and prosperity.
