SAN ANGELO, TX — Lt. Chris Cimino is one of the three contenders running for the four-year term to succeed outgoing San Angelo Police Chief Frank Carter.
The other candidates include Lt. Mike 'Burrito' Hernandez and Sgt. Travis Griffith.
Each candidate will be profiled.
Residents can vote for the non-partisan Police Chief election on May 4, 2024.
San Angelo LIVE! is set to host a Police Chief Candidate Forum/Debate on Monday evening, March 18, 2024. The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Sugg Room at the Stephens Central Library.
The forum will be moderated by San Angelo LIVE! publisher Joe Hyde.
The forum will consist of an introduction of the candidates along with a question-and-answer segment.
The forum will also be streamed live on the San Angelo LIVE! website, YouTube, and Facebook platforms.
Admission to the event is free, and it is encouraged to arrive early, as seating is limited.
Additionally, San Angelo LIVE! is accepting endorsement letters in the Police Chief race. Letters can be submitted via email to [email protected].
Now, who is Cimino?
According to his campaign website, Cimino is a husband, a dad, and a leader.
“I was blessed to have met my wife in high school. She is, was, and will always be the most important person in my life,” information from his website states. “The most rewarding thing is being a part of my kids lives. The ordinary turns extraordinary on a daily basis.”
“The safety and welfare of my officers is the first thing on my mind when I wake up, and their names are the last thing on my lips when I go to sleep,” the information reads.
Cimino’s family emigrated from Italy to America and arrived at Ellis Island in December of 1912.
He was born in Ohio and grew up mostly in Big Spring since he was six years old.
Cimino served in the U.S. Marine Corps infantry as a 0351 from 1994 to 1998.
He graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock with a BA in 2003.
Cimino joined the San Angelo Police Department in 2005. he would be promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2013 and Lieutenant in 2016.
“I have been a Master Peace Officer since 2014, and I have 5,429 training hours currently on record with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement,” Cimino stated.

“I’ve done everything I could have wanted to do, and even some things that were never in my plans to do but were asked of me,” he states. “I was awarded Patrol Supervisor of the Year in my first year as a supervisor in the department.
“San Angelo is the first home I've had,” Cimino stated. “I lived all over the country growing up and all over the world as an adult. This is where I have chosen to create my life and raise my family. San Angelo is unlike any other place I've ever lived. The people here are welcoming and friendly. I want them to have the best police department in the state, with the best-trained officers working for them.”
“This department needs a Chief of Police who is not a politician nor a candidate seeking a career political appointment,” information from his campaign states. “It needs a leader who is willing to make difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions. It needs someone who is not an integral part of the “good ol’ boy” system which is pervasive and ruinous to small departments like ours. It needs a person who doesn't owe anyone a single thing.”
