Historic Primary Election Yields 3 Runoffs in Tom Green County

SAN ANGELO – Voters in Tom Green County had to wait until the wee hours of the Morning Wednesday to see the final, unofficial results from the historic March 1 GOP Primary election and the results left three races to be decided in runoff elections in May.

According to the final figures released by the Tom Green County Elections office after midnight, there will be a runoff election between Lane Carter and Todd Kolls for County Judge, Shawn Nanny and Bill Ford for County Commissioner Pct.4, and Ron Perry and Stacye Speck for Justice of the Peace in Pct. 3.

None of the candidates in those races garnered over 50 % of the votes cast to win the primary outright, so Texas election law allows for the top two candidates in each primary who receive the most votes to meet again in a runoff election.

In the race for Tom Green County Judge, the results are as follows:

Lane Carter 3,878 or 35.12%

Todd Kolls 3,534 or 32%

Joe Hyde 2,001 or 18.12%

Tommy Usery 1,630 or 14.76%

To win a contested election with more that two candidates, one candidate would have to receive over 50% of the votes cast.  It the County Judge race, that would have been 5,522 votes.

In the race for Tom Green County Commissioner Pct. 4, the unofficial results are as follows:

Shawn Nanny 799 or 26.06%

Incumbent Bill Ford 781 or 25.47%

Lori Wilson 543 or 17.71%

Dustin Barton 407 or 13.27%

CoCo Simpson 379 or 12.36%

Derrick Garnett 157 or 5.12%

A candidate in the race for Pct. 4 County Commissioner would have had to receive 1534 votes to win without a runoff.

In what may have been the surprise race of the evening, there will be a runoff for Tom Green County Justice of the Peace in Pct. 3.  The results are as follows:

Ron Perry 1,162 or 47.17%

Stacye Speck 1,095 or 44.46%

Martha Muro 206 or 8.36%

A candidate in that race would have to have received 1,232 votes to win without a runoff.  Interestingly, there were 212 under votes, which would have been enough to put either Perry or Speck over the top as the winner of the race without a runoff.

Candidates who won their respective races outright without a runoff in Tom Green County are as follows:

Andrew Graves, Tom Green County Court at Law #2 Judge 50.56%

Christina Ubando, Tom Green County Clerk 63.53%

Susan Werner, Tom Green County Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 75.68%

Tom Daniel, Tom Green County Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 52.78%

Mercedes dela Cruz, Tom Green County Democratic Party Chair 76.73%
