San Angelo Breaks Heat Record

A heat advisory was issued for the Northern Edwards Plateau, where temperatures and heat index values were forecast to reach 105 to 110 degrees. The warnings covered a wide area of West Central Texas, including Abilene, San Angelo, Ballinger, Brownwood and other communities. 

The National Weather Service urged residents to follow heat safety guidelines: stay hydrated, limit or cancel strenuous outdoor activities, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and remain in air conditioning when possible. Heat-related deaths are preventable, officials said. 

An extended forecast called for a brief, minor cooldown Friday and Saturday before temperatures return to summer-like levels. Highs were expected to drop into the low 90s in many spots over the weekend before rebounding into the mid-90s to low 100s early next week. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were possible Thursday afternoon and evening, with rain chances lingering into Saturday morning.
