SAN ANGELO, TX — The National Weather Service is warning residents in the San Angelo area to prepare for strong to severe thunderstorms and possible flash flooding this afternoon and evening, with additional heavy rainfall likely early next week.
A slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather is in effect today, Friday, May 2, for areas south of Interstate 20, including San Angelo. Forecasters say scattered storms are expected to intensify later in the day, with threats including large hail up to two inches, damaging winds between 60-70 mph, frequent lightning, and isolated tornadoes.
There is also a slight risk of excessive rainfall, with flash flooding most likely in areas already saturated from recent rain. According to the National Weather Service, the combination of widespread thunderstorm development and heavy downpours could create hazardous driving conditions, especially south of I-20.
Looking ahead, another round of heavy rain is forecast for Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning, particularly for areas north of a line from Sterling City to Abilene. The expected thunderstorms early next week could bring additional flooding risks.
