SAN ANGELO, TX — Cody Gift has submitted a 51.55-pound flathead catfish caught at Lake Nasworthy as the new pending rod-and-reel waterbody record — and, if certified, the heaviest fish ever documented from the lake.
The fish measured 44-3/4 inches long and surpasses both the current rod-and-reel flathead catfish record of 45.35 pounds set by Colton Wiemers in 2015 and the lake’s all-tackle record of 51.5 pounds set by David Schobel in 1989 using a trotline.
According to the Inland Fisheries San Angelo District of Texas Parks and Wildlife, Gift released the fish alive back into the lake after measurements were taken.
The catch is now awaiting official verification from Texas Parks and Wildlife. If confirmed, it would set a new benchmark for both rod-and-reel anglers and overall catch records at Lake Nasworthy.
