SAN ANGELO, TX — The National Weather Service has expanded the risk area for severe storms across West Central Texas, including San Angelo, for late Thursday night into early Friday. Forecasts indicate storms could bring damaging winds and large hail up to baseball size.
The Storm Prediction Center elevated Thursday night’s severe risk to Level 2 out of 5 and extended it farther south. Thunderstorms are expected to develop after midnight, with the main hazards being large hail and strong winds.

In addition to the severe threat, forecasters say there is a 5 percent chance of flash flooding in areas north of San Angelo to San Saba due to heavy rainfall overnight.

The threat continues into Friday evening and overnight, with another round of severe weather expected. The primary concern remains damaging winds and large hail, with locally heavy rainfall possible, especially east of San Angelo. A 15 percent flash flood risk has been issued for those eastern counties late Friday into the night.

According to the latest detailed forecast, showers and thunderstorms are likely to begin after 1 a.m. Friday morning and continue through Friday night. Rainfall totals between a quarter and half an inch are expected, with higher amounts possible in storms.
