SAN ANGELO, TX – The National Weather Service has issued a Dust Storm Warning for a large portion of the Concho Valley until 5 p.m. Wednesday, as winds of 45-50 mph lift dust and reduce visibility to near zero in some areas.
The most affected region stretches from San Angelo to Sterling City, with dust moving east across Robert Lee to near Ballinger. Motorists traveling on US-87 from San Angelo to Sterling City, US-67 from San Angelo to Ballinger, and SH-208 from San Angelo to Robert Lee should expect hazardous conditions. Other impacted roadways include US-277 and US-83.
The NWS San Angelo previously warned of blowing dust reducing visibility to under one mile in areas along US-87 near Sterling City, extending toward Sweetwater, San Angelo, and Abilene. Drivers are advised to use extra cautionand remain alert for sudden drops in visibility and strong wind gusts.
The emergency alert system has urged drivers to pull aside and stay alive if visibility worsens. Those caught in heavy dust should move far off the road, turn off lights, and keep their foot off the brake to prevent collisions. Additionally, infants, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions are advised to take precautions due to worsening air quality.
