SAN ANGELO, TX – Strong winds and dry conditions are creating hazardous weather across West Central Texas on Tuesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Warning and a Red Flag Warning for the region.
Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected by late morning, with sustained west winds of 35 to 45 mph throughout the day.
The National Weather Service warned that these strong winds could cause blowing dust, downed power lines, and hazardous driving conditions, especially on north-south roadways such as US-87, US-67, US-277, US-83, US-84, and SH-70. High-profile vehicles are particularly at risk.
The Red Flag Warning, in effect from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., highlights critical fire weather conditions, as low humidity (10-15%) and gusty winds increase the risk of wildfire spread. Officials advise against outdoor burning and urge residents to secure any loose objects that could become airborne.
The forecast calls for widespread blowing dust from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a high of 72 degrees. Winds are expected to gradually decrease overnight but could still produce gusts up to 30 mph. Conditions are expected to improve Wednesday, with lighter winds and highs in the mid-60s.
