SAN ANGELO, TX – While West Central Texas is set to experience spring-like temperatures this weekend, the National Weather Service has issued a Fire Danger Statement for parts of the region due to elevated fire weather conditions.
The fire danger alert is in effect today from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. for areas west of a line from Abilene to San Angelo to Sonora. The combination of low humidity (15-20%), dry fuels, and strong west winds of 20 to 30 mph, with higher gusts, creates a heightened risk for wildfires.
Despite the fire risk, the forecast calls for above-normal temperatures throughout the weekend.
San Angelo is forecast to see highs of 75°F on Saturday and 80°F on Sunday, with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s. Breezy southerly winds will accompany the warming trend, creating spring-like conditions across the region.
Other cities in the area, including Abilene, Brownwood, and Ballinger, could see temperatures climb even higher, with highs reaching the low-to-mid 80s by Sunday and Monday.
Despite the warm weather, gusty winds remain a factor. The forecast indicates west and southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph on Thursday, with gusts up to 40 mph. Overnight lows will remain cool, dipping into the upper 30s and 40s. Today's high will be in the mid-60s.
