Severe Weather Brings Threat of Thunderstorms, Flooding, and Cooler Temps

A Flood Watch has been issued for the Big Country and western Concho Valley, effective from 6 p.m. Thursday to 3 p.m. Friday. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage from late Thursday morning, intensifying into Friday morning. The primary hazards include damaging winds between 60 and 70 mph, large hail up to ping-pong ball size, and a slight chance of isolated tornadoes. Residents are advised to exercise caution, especially in flood-prone areas, as low-lying roads and poor drainage areas could see rapid flooding.

The heaviest rainfall is anticipated Thursday night through early Friday, with totals between 0.5 to 3.5 inches expected across the region. Western counties, particularly in the Big Country, may experience localized higher amounts, though there is a 10% chance that some areas could see rainfall exceeding 5 inches. These conditions could lead to flash flooding, particularly during Friday morning’s commute.

As the storm system passes, widespread rain and cooler temperatures will extend through Saturday. Temperatures are forecast to remain in the mid-to-upper 60s on Thursday and Friday, with highs gradually rising over the weekend. By early next week, drier and warmer conditions are expected, with another cold front projected to bring additional cooling by Wednesday.

The National Weather Service advises securing outdoor items, avoiding flooded roads, and staying clear of windows during severe storms. Motorists should plan for potentially hazardous driving conditions, especially during peak rainfall and flood watch periods.
