SAN ANGELO, TX – The National Weather Service has issued a series of alerts for strong to severe thunderstorms expected to impact the Concho Valley and Big Country areas today.
Damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes are possible as storms develop and move eastward.
Severe thunderstorms are anticipated to intensify late this morning and continue into the afternoon, with the main hazards being wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail as large as two inches in diameter, and the potential for tornadoes. The NWS has placed parts of the region, including San Angelo, under a “Marginal” to “Slight” risk level for severe weather, with the highest risk in the Big Country area.
Heavy rainfall is also forecast, with an Excessive Rainfall Outlook indicating a risk for localized flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. A Flood Watch remains in effect through 6 p.m. for Haskell, Throckmorton, Fisher, and Jones counties due to expected heavy rainfall from these thunderstorms.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and stay indoors during severe storms, avoiding windows and flooded roadways. The NWS advises, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown."
