SAN ANGELO, TX - West Texas residents are in for a scorching weekend as extreme temperatures continue to grip the region, but there’s a slight chance for some relief.
The National Weather Service has issued another Excessive Heat Warning for the Big Country, including Abilene, where temperatures are expected to climb as high as 110°F on Friday. Meanwhile, a Heat Advisory is in effect for the Concho Valley, Heartland, and Mason County, with forecasts predicting highs between 105°F and 110°F.
Despite the oppressive heat, there’s a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms late Friday afternoon and evening, which could provide some brief respite from the extreme temperatures. However, these storms are expected to be isolated, and most areas will likely remain dry.
Saturday’s forecast calls for continued sunny and hot conditions, with San Angelo expected to reach a high of 103°F, and heat index values as high as 106°F. Winds will shift to the southeast at 5 to 10 mph, providing little relief from the heat. Overnight lows will hover around 77°F with mostly clear skies.
On Sunday, temperatures will remain high, with a forecasted peak near 100°F in San Angelo. There’s a slight chance of additional showers, but the NWS emphasizes that the heat will continue to dominate the region. South winds will persist at 5 to 10 mph, and nighttime lows will be in the mid-70s.
The NWS advises residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activities, and wear light, breathable clothing to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
