Abilene Sets All-Time Heat Record

ABILENE, TX - Abilene experienced its hottest temperature ever recorded this afternoon, hitting a blistering 113°F.

This new record, confirmed by the National Weather Service, surpasses the previous all-time high of 111°F, which was last reached on August 17, 2023.

Today’s extreme temperature marks the highest in nearly 140 years of weather records for Abilene, where data collection began in 1885. The record-breaking heat is part of a broader wave of scorching temperatures sweeping across West Texas, with several cities, including San Angelo, approaching record highs as well.

We reported earlier today that San Angelo broke a temperature record for Aug. 21, reaching 108°F by 12:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS has urged residents to take precautions against the extreme heat, which can lead to dangerous health conditions such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. tonight, with residents advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and remain in air-conditioned environments when possible.
