TPWD Announces Fishes of Texas iNaturalist Contest

AUSTIN, TX — Texas Parks and Wildlife made a call to action on Monday, July 1, to all Texas anglers and fish enthusiasts who want to help track native Texas fish. To do this, TPWD introduces the Fishes of Texas iNatualist Contest.

TPWD detailed the contest on its Facebook page on Monday.

“Every two months, we will spotlight a different species, starting off with the state fish of Texas, the Guadalupe Bass,” Texas Parks and Wildlife said. “Win this first challenge by submitting the most observations of Guadalupe Bass to the Fishes of Texas Project on iNaturalist between July 1st and August 31st.”

Each submission will strengthen the dataset used by TPWD and researchers across the state to aid in the conservation of Guadalupe Bass and Texas’s river ecosystems.

Here are the Contest Rules:

•  Observations must occur between July 1st and August 31st and be tagged to the Fishes of TX iNaturalist project.

•  One fish per observation with photo quality good enough to correctly ID to species.

•  Location information must be within 100m of accuracy.

Typically, Guadalupe bass are found in flowing water, whereas largemouth bass are found in quiet water. The Guadalupe bass is found only in Texas and has been named the official state fish. It is endemic to the northern and eastern Edwards Plateau, including the San Antonio River headwaters, the Guadalupe River above Gonzales, the Colorado River north of Austin, and portions of the Brazos River drainage. Relatively small populations can also be found outside of the Edwards Plateau, primarily in the lower Colorado River. Introduced populations exist in the Nueces River system.
