BURNET, TX - A rare fungus known as the Texas Star Mushroom (Chorioactis geaster), also known as the "hissing mushroom," was spotted at Inks Lake State Park on Tuesday.
Situated just an hour away from Austin, the state park in Burnet found a unique and elusive natural wonder.
The Texas Star Mushroom emerges as a dark brown, fuzzy capsule measuring 3 to 4 inches in length, earning it another fitting nickname, the "Devil's Cigar."
Notably, when the Devil's Cigar unfurls, it releases a strange hissing noise accompanied by a hazy cloud of spores.
Information states that the Texas Star Mushroom is highly selective about its habitat, typically attaching itself to decaying cedar elm stumps in the central and northern regions of Texas.
This rare fungus remains unique to Texas, with only sporadic sightings in Oklahoma and the Kyushu region of Japan.
This scarcity makes the Texas Star Mushroom one of the rarest mushrooms globally.
