Wildfire Danger Concerns Add to Extreme Heat Woes

SAN ANGELO – A severe lack of rain and months of extreme heat have baked brush and grass so much this summer that any spark could set off a wildfire that could rapidly burn out of control.

Weather experts with the National Weather Service say low humidity, high temperatures, gusty winds and tinder dry fuels have created the perfect storm for wildfires across all of West Texas and have issued a Red Flag Warning for Monday afternoon along with the Excessive Heat Warning already in place.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical wildfire conditions exist and the threat of out-of-control wildfires is significant.

Officials warn residents than any spark, even from grilling or welding, could set off a wildfire.  All outdoor burning is discouraged and there are burn bans in effect in most counties.

These conditions are forecast to continue for several days so residents are encouraged to plan accordingly.

As we reported earlier, this week is going to be a scorcher with probable Excessive Heat Warnings every day.

Avoid outdoor activities if at all possible.  If you have to work or be outdoors for an extended period, were clothing and sunscreen that will protect you from the sun.  Stay hydrated; drink plenty of fluids and take frequent breaks in the shade.  Check on vulnerable friends and neighbors.

Never, ever leave a child or a pet locked in a hot car.  If pets or children must be outdoors during the afternoon hours, make sure they have plenty of fresh water, shade and food.  If you can't be outdoors, neither can they.  If you must leave a pet outside in this dangerous weather, maybe you shouldn't have pets at all.

Afternoon temperatures will rise to near 110 degrees this week.  The heat index will be well above that so this is a very serious situation.
