Heat & Wildfire Danger Warnings for West Texas Sunday

SAN ANGELO – The extremely hot and dry weather across west Texas is creating dangerous conditions for humans to be outdoors Sunday and those will continue all week.

The National Weather Service office in San Angelo has issued an Excessive Heat Warning and a Wildfire Danger alert in effect Sunday afternoon through 9 p.m.  Afternoon high temperatures will reach near 109 with the heat index around 111.  The same weather pattern will continue across the Concho Valley for the next seven to ten days.

The Excessive Heat Warning means everything is hot outside from the pavement to the water to the air.  Take sensible precautions if venturing outside including stay hydrated wear clothing that protects you from the sun, take frequent breaks in the shade and schedule all strenuous activities to the early morning and late evening hours when its cooler.

Leave the pets and kids inside if at all possible.  Give them plenty of fresh water, food and shade if they have to be outside for any length of time.  And never chain a child or pet outdoors or lock them in a hot vehicle, no matter how mad you get at them. That's criminal.

Cooler weather, well, more tolerable warm weather anyway, is on the way in about four weeks so hang in there.  If you have an air-conditioned room to enjoy, take advantage of that and maybe even invite others to join you.

There's no rain in the ten day forecast but tradition and the Farmer's Almanac are on our side.  Normally the Concho Valley sees some rain in mid-August and then around the Labor Day weekend Sept. 1.
