SAN ANGELO – After the mercury topped out at 112 degrees on Sunday, meteorologists with the National Weather Service in San Angelo extended the Excessive Heat Warning another day to Tuesday evening.
Monday will be the 13th straight day the temperature has exceeded 100 degrees in San Angelo with at least 30 more days forecast.
Prolonged temperatures this hot can evaporate irrigation water almost as fast as farmers can apply it to crops, wrinkles railroad tracks causing derailments like the one in Abilene over the weekend, overloads air-conditioning systems and can overheat old electric circuits causing electrical fires.
Those challenges add to the toll on the human body so experts recommend avoiding outdoor activities during the heat of the day and confining outdoor excursions to the early morning and late afternoon hours. If you must go outside, wear long sleeves, hats and gloves and sunscreen. Stay hydrated, drink plenty of fluids and check on friends and neighbors.
Never, ever leave a child or a pet unattended in a locked vehicle.
Make sure all outdoor pets and children have plenty of fresh water, shade and access to food.
Dangerously hot conditions are expected with temps between 105 and 113 for at least the next seven days. Expect the Excessive Heat Warning to be extended daily through the month of July and well into August.
