NWS: More Severe Weather Possible Friday Night

SAN ANGELO – A line of thunderstorms swept just north of San Angelo Thursday night dumping hail and heavy rain from Grape Creek to Sweetwater knocking out power and causing some minor flooding in low-lying areas and there's a chance for additional storms including stronger and more severe widespread flooding and a possible tornado tonight.

Grape Creek residents report up to 2 inches of rain in the area along with power outages Thursday night.  Minor flooding was observed but no injuries or serious property damage was reported.  Power was restored in a few hours according to sources.

According to information collated by the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, Friday will be another hot day with temperatures reaching the mid 90s before a frontal system moves in late this afternoon.  A southbound cold front will destabilize the atmosphere and there will be plenty of energy to kickoff severe thunderstorms across the Concho Valley and the Heartland Friday evening.

The main weather threats will be heavy rain, large hail and damaging winds.  Storm systems like this one can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.  Flooding of low-lying areas will also be possible in the San Angelo area with the stronger storms.

The rain chance is 70% for Friday night then it drops off to 30% for the rest of the weekend.

Look for additional weather advisories, watches and warnings along with instructions later Friday as the storm system moves into the area and the potential threats can be better assessed.
