ASU Graduation Interrupted by Lightning Strike on Flag Pole

 

SAN ANGELO, TX – A graduation ceremony at the Junell Center on the Angelo State University campus was interrupted over the weekend by a lightning strike.

According to the Angelo State University Police Department, on May 13, 2023, during the second ASU graduation, lightening struck the flag pole outside of the Junell Center.

"Last night during ASU’s second graduation…lightening struck the flagpole in front of the Junell Center," state the ASU PD on Facebook. "Thankfully no one was injured!"

As a result of the lighting strike, the concrete under the pole was broken. 

A lightning bolt can reach 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit, about five times hotter than the surface of our sun. Lightning strikes the United States 20 million times per year. Lightning moves about 30,000 times faster than a bullet. Thunder is the result of the rapid heating and expansion of air caused by a lightning flash.
