Wildfire Danger Returns As Excessive Heat Warning Extended Again

SAN ANGELO – Heat records could fall across West Texas Tuesday as San Angelo and Abilene are expected to set heat records as wildfire danger returns to the area and that Excessive Heat Warning has been extended through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, the all time high temperature for the month of July in Abilene is 110 degrees, which the city tied Monday.  The hottest temperature on record for Abilene is just 1 degree hotter at 111.

In San Angelo, the all time high is also 111 set in 1943.  San Angelo is expected to reach 108 degrees Tuesday, which would tie the high temperature for this date.  Abilene is forecast to reach 110 Tuesday which will shatter the high for July 19 of 108 degrees set back in 1936.

Needless to say, the weather is hot and dry in West Texas.  The NWS has also issued a Fire Danger Statement for the Big Country along with extending the Excessive Heat Warning through Wednesday evening.

The Fire Danger Statement has been issued for the Big Country from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday.  Expect temperatures above 100 degrees with southwest winds at 10 to 20 mph and gusty and humidities of 13 to 20% and extremely dry fuels.  Those factors combine to create extreme wildfire danger conditions.  Outdoor burning or any outdoor activity that produces an open flame or spark are highly discouraged.  These conditions are favorable for wind-driven grass fires.

An Excessive Heat Warning means the following criteria have been met: heat index of at least 105°F for more than 3 hours per day for 2 consecutive days, or heat index more than 115°F for any period of time.  There is a good chance the Excessive Heat Warning could be extended or replaced with a lesser Heat Advisory as temperatures are expected to reach above 100 degrees for the next ten days.

Residents are advised to stay inside an air-conditioned building if at all possible.  If one must be outside, it is recommended that they drink plenty of fluids, wear loose fitting, lightweight clothing and take frequent breaks out of the sun.  And never, ever, ever leave a child or a pet in a locked vehicle.  That can only spell disaster.

There is no rain in the forecast at this time.
