SAN ANGELO – The scorching heat wave and drought is blasting like a furnace across West Texas prompting meteorologist to issue an Excessive Heat Warning from 1 p.m. Monday through 10 p.m. Tuesday evening.
A ridge of high pressure continues to sit above the region allowing for light winds and soaring temperatures.
San Angelo's forecast high Monday is 109 while the high in Cairo, Egypt is expected to be 99 degrees.
An Excessive Heat Warning means it's going to be hotter and more dangerous than it has been over the last two weeks. Temperatures could reach 110 degrees Monday and Tuesday afternoon creating conditions in which heat related illnesses can occur quickly.
Anyone working outside is encouraged to take extra precautions during the warning period. Take extra breaks in the shade, drink plenty of fluids, wear lightweight loose fitting clothing and stay in an air conditioned building if possible. Know the signs of heat related illnesses and act quickly. Check on friends and neighbors who might be vulnerable to heat illness.
And never, ever leave a pet or a child in a hot car. That could quickly result in death.
Temperatures will remain well above 100 degrees each afternoon throughout the week. It is likely the Extreme Heat Warning will be extended or a Heat Advisory will be issued depending on conditions.
There are burn bans in most counties and as in every summer, residents are asked to use common sense and conserve water and electricity. While the conditions haven't reached the criteria for a wildfire danger statement or advisory to be issued, it is tinder dry and any wildfire which ignites could do severe damage and be difficult to control.
This is a serious weather situation and residents should check back here frequently for updated information.
