Trace of Rain Thursday Has Little Affect As San Angelo Dives Deeper into Drought

SAN ANGELO – The scattered and short-lived thunderstorms that rushed through the San Angelo area did little to alleviate the drought and the city is falling further and further behind the average rainfall for the year as crops wither in the field and livestock herds are headed to market.

The National Weather Service office at Mathis Field recorded just .001 inches of rain Thursday which is the total for the 15 days of July.  That puts the total rainfall for the year at 3.37 inches, which is 7.62 inches below average for this time of year.  At this pace, 2022 could rival 2011 as one of the driest and hottest years in recorded history for San Angelo.

Heat is a contributing factor to the drought in that so far in, 2022 San Angelo has reached 100 degrees on 47 days.  The record number of 100 degree days for San Angelo is 100 set in the extreme drought year of 2011.

The forecast calls for afternoon high temps to reach 100 degrees or above for the next 10 days and possibly through the end of the month.

There is not a Heat Advisory in effect for San Angelo today for the first time in several days because the combination of temperature, humidity and wind has not met the necessary criteria.  Still, though, it is going to be dangerously hot and residents are advised to take precautions while working or recreating outdoors.

Look for afternoon hight temperatures over the weekend to reach 102 degrees each day increasing to around 104 by the middle of next week.  There is no significant chance of rain over the next 30 days in the forecast for West Central Texas.
