Heat Advisory Issued As Memorial Day Weekend Heats Up in the Concho Valley

SAN ANGELO – Temperatures are forecast to reach 100 degrees or higher for the next several days and the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the Concho Valley Saturday heading into the long Memorial Day Holiday weekend.

According to meteorologists, temperatures Saturday will be 3 to 5 degrees warmer than they were Friday putting high temps Saturday afternoon near 105 degrees.  Those high temperatures will combine with gusty southwest winds and low humidity to create conditions favorable to the rapid spread of wildfires and to heat related illnesses as people celebrate the holiday at outdoor events and activities.

The Heat Advisory is in effect from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Heat illnesses are possible in hot conditions like those that will exist throughout the Memorial Day weekend.  Experts recommend everyone know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.  If you are spending extended time outdoors in the heat, drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids to avoid dehydration, take frequent breaks in the shade or preferably an air conditioned room, and wear light and loose fitting clothing.  Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing like long sleeves and head coverings.

These conditions will likely persist throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

While most parts of the Concho Valley and Big Country received some rainfall in the recent storms, the area is still extremely dry and the threat of wildfire spreading rapidly still exists.  Tom Green County Commissioners lifted the Burn Ban during their regular meeting Tuesday but caution is advised.

There is a slight chance that a dry line will form in the Permian Basin and move east into the Western counties of the Concho Valley Saturday afternoon.  Any storm that develops will be short lived and not reach severe levels.

It is going to be a hot and dry Memorial Day weekend so residents are advised to plan accordingly.

Heat advisories and other heat related weather information will be released as the weekend progresses.  Stay tuned to local media for future updates.
