SAN ANGELO – Heavy rainfall could produce flooding across most of West Central Texas Thursday night into Friday night impacting high school football games across the region.
Meteorologists with the National Weather Service office in San Angelo are forecasting a cold front will push through the Texas Panhandle and reach the Big Country Thursday afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop along and ahead of the cold front.
Afternoon heating will destabilize the atmosphere ahead of the front allowing for the formation of showers and thunderstorms across the Permian Basin and Big Country by around 4 p.m. Thursday. Those storms will then move into the Concho Valley during the evening hours. A line of thunderstorms could develop over the Trans-Pecos region Thursday afternoon which could produce damaging high winds and large hail.
Forecast models show 1.25 to 2 inches of rain could fall across the Concho Valley Thursday causing flooding of low lying areas. The NWS may issue a flood watch Thursday afternoon.
Friday and Friday night, showers and thunderstorms will be numerous across the area with 1.4 to 1.75 inches of rain possible causing flooding across the area during Friday night football.
The forecast is calling for an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms region wide Thursday night.
On Friday and Friday night, the chance for precipitation is 70%.
Everyone planning on attending a high school football game Friday night in West Central Texas is urged to prepare for heavy rains, thunderstorms and widespread flooding.
