Numerous Wildfires Stretching Volunteer Fire Departments to the Limit in and Around Tom Green County

SAN ANGELO, TX – Firefighters from every volunteer fire department in Tom Green County have responded to a number of wildfire calls over the last few days and some of those fires are driven by winds from localized thunderstorms.

VFD radio reports indicate volunteers from Wall and Christoval are currently working a wildfire on a ranch near Susan Peak Rd. in southeastern Tom Green County under a thunderstorm.

Earlier this afternoon units from Pecan Creek, Christoval and Wall were dispatched to a wildfire near the intersection of FM-584 and Knickerbocker Rd. by the Twin Buttes Dam.

Volunteers also responded to fire reports between Sterling City and Robert Lee and Christoval volunteers engaged a fire near the Jones Ranch in southern Tom Green County.

While the Texas Forest Service is assisting area volunteers, resources are being depleted.

Dove Creek Volunteers were called out late Wednesday afternoon to a possible wildfire near the Knickerbocker community on Torres Rd.

Firefighters are aware that while it is legal to set off fireworks on private property in the county, residents are urged to have a water source and a plan in case a wildfire erupts.

Discharging fireworks is always illegal inside the San Angelo city limits including in parks around Lake Nasworthy where people are allowed to watch the Lake Nasworthy HOA fireworks display.

Firefighters and first responders remind everyone to be safe and follow the law when celebrating Independence Day and also remember to social distance during the ongoing worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

Today is the seventh anniversary of 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who died fighting the Yarnell Fire, when the wind turned on them. Remember that any sparks or embers can cause a fire, e.g., cigarette butts thrown out the window, grills, clearing a little area in your yard which turns into acres of fire. Be conscious of your actions; stay safe. Do not put firefighters in danger because you "didn't think".
