150,000 Large Mouth Bass Released Into Brady Creek Reservoir

BRADY, TX – The Texas Parks and Wildlife has officially restored the Bass Population in the Brady Creek Reservoir.

According to the Inland Fisheries San Angelo District - Texas Parks and Wildlife, on May 20, the TPW stocked approx. 150,000 Florida strain Largemouth Bass fry into Brady Creek Reservoir.

This was the 5th consecutive year for Florida bass stockings at Brady Creek Reservoir and likely the last one for the time being.

The goal of these stockings over the past 5 years was to (1.) rebuild the bass population following golden algae fish kills in 2012 and 2014 and, (2.) increase the Florida strain genetics in the population, which are faster growing than the northern strain.

A genetics sample from 2018 showed 81% of the population was comprised of Florida strain genetics while 10% were pure Florida strain bass. Since the bass population is well on its way to recovery and additional stockings would likely not push that percentage much higher, TPW believes their goal has been met.

The TPW will continue to monitor the bass population through sampling in fall 2020 and 2022 and assess the genetics again in the fall of 2022.
