SAN ANGELO, TX - Every season in West Texas is a challenge. Farmer's Daughter Landscape & Gardening Center has a few tips to add the lipstick to your yard.
According to Tam Honaker at Farmer’s Daughter, “We’re close enough to San Antonio that we want to have the Hill Country look or people want to have what you grow in Dallas. Well, it’s just not the same.”
Learn to accept that this place is different, she said.

This season, some variables gardeners are working with are:
- When choosing what to plant and if “full sun” is recommended for that plant, know that “full sun” in Austin is not the same thing as “full sun” in San Angelo
- Weeds are horrible this year. The Concho Valley weather this late winter and early spring has seen high velocity blowing wind spreading seeds around. That has increased the reports of weeds surfacing in yards and flowerbeds, Honaker said.
- The good is that as we move into spring, the rains have released plentiful water on the soil here.
Honaker views landscaping as akin to applying makeup to one’s face. “Your base makeup are your hedges, your shrubs, your foundation shrubs, and your evergreens” she said. Then one applies to that base some color with perennials that grow flowers.”
“Have nice, large beds that you mulch,” Honaker said.
