WASHINGTON — The U.S. government's free at-home COVID-19 test distribution program has been suspended.
The decision comes almost five years to the day that the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020.
The United States Postal Service made the announcement Sunday that it would no longer be accepting orders.
The program has been suspended before, but the Biden administration reopened it in September after the CDC made a renewed push for people to get their COVID-19 booster shots — despite the fact the shots don’t prevent transmission and haven’t proven to be safe and effective.
It was reported last month that the Trump administration was evaluating the cost of the program and considering ending it.
U.S. taxpayers have reportedly spent billions of dollars funding COVID-19 tests the last five years.
