WASHINGTON — Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan has died at the age of 71, according to multiple media reports Thursday morning.
TMZ Sports was the first outlet to report the death of the WWE legend, stating paramedics were called to Hogan’s Clearwater, Florida, home early Thursday. TMZ reported that the call was related to cardiac arrest.
Hogan’s manager, Chris Volo, told NBC Los Angeles that Hogan died at home surrounded by family.
Born Terry Gene Bollea, Hogan began his professional wrestling career in 1977 and gained international fame after signing with the World Wrestling Federation, later rebranded as WWE. His charismatic style, trademark handlebar mustache, and bandanas helped him become one of the most recognizable wrestlers in the world, especially during the 1980s wrestling boom.
Though retired from in-ring competition since 2012, Hogan remained affiliated with WWE as a brand ambassador.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Hogan would serve as commissioner for Real American Freestyle Wrestling, a new venture backed by his Real American Beer brand.
