Poison Control Centers Warn of Rising Cases Involving Kids and Energy Drinks

SAN ANGELO, TX - Calls to U.S. poison control centers related to children consuming energy drinks surged by 20% in 2023, marking an increase after several years of steady numbers, according to America’s Poison Centers.

The organization, which oversees 55 poison centers nationwide, reported that cases involving children and energy drinks climbed from 2,323 in 2022 to 2,834 in 2023. Almost 48% of these incidents occurred unintentionally among young children, with the number of cases among kids aged 6 to 12 nearly doubling.

Energy drinks often contain much higher levels of caffeine than sodas or coffee, raising health concerns for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Food and Drug Administration have both advised that children and teens should avoid energy drinks, warning of potential health risks, including rapid heart rate, anxiety, and in severe cases, seizures or cardiac issues.

Parents are urged to look out for signs of caffeine poisoning in children, such as increased heart rate, tremors, nausea, or anxiety. Immediate medical attention is advised if these symptoms occur.
