SAN ANGELO, TX -- The naturalization ceremony for 31 people wanting to legally become citizens of the United States scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed because of the national day of Mourning for President George H.W. Bush.
According to information from the U.S. District Clerk's office in San Angelo, Due to the President's designated federal holiday to mourn the death of former President George Bush, the naturalization ceremony has been
cancelled/postponed.
The District Clerk's office is working to reschedule the naturalization ceremony in January.
The U.S. District Court in San Angelo normally holds naturalization ceremonies once a quarter for foreign citizens who have successfully completed the process of naturalization.
The naturalization process includes a requirement that an individual wanting to become a citizen have proof of legal residency in the U.S. for five years, must be able to read, write and understand English, have a basic understanding of U.S. Government and History, be a person of good moral character, and demonstrate an attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution.
Former President George H.W. Bush passed away Friday in Houston at the age of 94. His grandson Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush is married to a woman whose family has ties to San Angelo.
Bush raised his family in Midland, TX and the boyhood home of former President George W. Bush is located there.
President Bush's casket will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda for three days beginning Monday. He will be buried next to his wife and daughter at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University.
