A Brief History of Memorial Day

 

As Americans enjoy a three-day weekend, many will pause and remember Memorial Day through ceremonies and moments of silence. 

Memorial Day is an American Holiday celebrated the last Monday in May honoring men and women who have died while serving in the United States Military.

The solemn commemoration was first known as Decoration Day and originated in the years following the Civil War.  It became an official holiday in 1971.
